The Crux of the Matter (Part 2)

Blind as we are, it was the cross and not the crown that won our love. It didn’t have to be that way. But love found a way, through smallness, through humiliation, a canal dug by God from the ocean of his love to our own little pond of pettiness in the hopes of changing things.

The Crux of the Matter (Part 1)

In this story, everything is reversed. The king becomes the servant, the rich one becomes a beggar, and the owner becomes homeless. The liberator becomes the oppressed, the freedom fighter becomes the person bound, the priest becomes the sacrifice, the original author of joy itself becomes the one so severely tortured.

The Minister's Specialty

Government, agencies, and entities have access to far more material resources than us in meeting immediate need, however, they are poor when it comes to providing what people really need. Ministers know insecurity of resources expose deeper insecurities of the soul.

Being Both the Welcomer and the Welcomed

Our world is full of migrations.  Recently a co-worker in the Northeast visited some asylum-seekers, a family who really didn't know how to get any resources in their new situation.  Yet this family was the host as my co-worker visited them.   All the family had to offer her was water, and a marshmallow—that is all they had in their empty apartment.  Yet they had something, and they were allowed to be the host.

Seeing and Believing

Just as others “can’t hear the gospel until they see the gospel,” so also, we will not be effective at sharing a gospel that is out of focus and not applicable to the people God has set before us. That includes our acts of compassion and kindness—If we refuse to see the true need, we cannot show them God’s love.

During the pandemic, many ministries in New York City instituted “grab and go” programs – giving people food or other needed things outside so people could safely receive help and then move on. Josh Johnson with a team at Graffiti 2 instituted something else: a “stop and care” ministry. They would buy food or coffee for someone and for themselves and then eat with them outside.

Three False Assumptions that Make You Quit (When You Are Not Supposed to Quit)
Jun 3, 2021

Some groups of psychologists talk about three false assumptions which hinder us. When we simply recognize these three assumptions, we see that they go counter to common sense. Yet these underlying expectations can make us quit when we are not supposed to quit.

Responding with a Right Heart

In addition to the freeing new start for an intentional working for God, everyone could do some reset on hearts and attitudes. It is an excellent opportunity to turn your worst habits and character traits “upside down.”

Planning For Good Works
Apr 15, 2021

Across the globe, millions of people have been given a “hard reset” for the normal course of their lives. With some insight and some planning, the tough parts of this isolation and slowdown can truly “work together for good” (Romans 8:28). It’s time to come out of this “Upside-down,” and better than we went in.

All the People

“ . . . I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.” (Luke 2:10) This sounds very good. Everyone wants good news and great joy. But does everyone honestly want to have to share their joy? With dirty people? With loud, rude people? With shy, inhibited people? With rich and proud “stuck up” people? Can’t groups simply stick with their “own kind”?

It’s a cold winter night, and the streets of Manhattan look bleak. We serve a meal at 6 pm and everything is already dark. I pass the restaurants in our area—all of them have constructed wooden overhangs so people can eat outside, so that the owners can make at least a little money and still employ a few people.

Good News Is a Verb
Dec 6, 2020

On that day, standing in the foyer, the mom and her kids needed good news. Yes, they need the Good News, but first they needed some coats and a gift card for a meal. They needed friends who knew their name. They needed people who wouldn’t just help once but offer to walk with them on their journey.
